I saw her standing near the kitchen slab
Slowly stirring the sugar cubes
into her cup of coffee
She looked calm and serene
with a smile at the corner of her lips

It’s been days since I saw her
and I was so happy and relieved to see her back
She sensed my presence in the room
but didn’t turn back to look at me

Coffee? She quizzed me
with her smile breaking into a wide grin
Yes, mother. I would love to!
I hugged her from behind
Her warmth giving my aching heart
the peace I had been craving for.
And, don’t forget to add extra sugar,
I giggled as I snuggled my face into her warmth
She turned her head to smile at me
as she mumbled softly.. As if I didn’t know!

I stared at my coffee mug
With sugar cubes melting slowly in it
As my coffee went cold and tasteless
As my mother smiled at me
from the photo frame on the table
